A historical place

La building who welcomes the Bormes les Mimosas Museum of History and Art (MHAB) lived several lives through the centuries. It has been private dwelling house, town hall, school, then private house again and finally, museum. Located in the extension of the Carnot Street, its existence begins at 17th century. The location is almost outside the village, in the vicinity of the bread ovens, built there to avoid the risk of fire.

The building was reworked several times but the use of the local stone for its construction has remained faithful to its architecture. The rooms are distributed over different levels to create large, airy and bright spaces. The coffered ceiling, inspired by Italian palaces, creates a atmosphere of bourgeois houses while maintaining the authenticity of the local gneiss.

In 2022, a new museographic and architectural program was launched for renovate the building et reveal its assets. The original materials have been preserved and highlighted with modern and lightweight materials. These latter magnify the existing while highlighting the Bormes stone. The project allows visitors to access the five levels of the building while preserving its structure. The museum benefits from a privileged position in the heart of the historic village facing the plain and the coast. Thanks to a new distribution of volumes, visitors can now enjoy a 360° view.
