The project of the Path of the Wise was born during a session of the Council of Elders, made up of 9 women and 9 men aged 60 and over, chosen for their wise experience by the Municipal Councillors. On that day, the subject of reflection was the question of how to bring our republican motto “Liberty, Equality, Fraternity” to life? 

The birth of the Path of the Sages

The idea germinated that sprinkle the city with sentences emanating from famous women and men, globally recognized for their wisdom and their humanism, could challenge the awareness of passers-by Borméens as tourists. In order to justify this bold and innovative project in the eyes of the Mayor and his Municipal Council, the decision is taken to combine this route with historical plaques which were to be installed on the city's emblematic monuments. The members of the Council of Elders then determined the route of this path within the medieval village and worked on the support, texts, images and symbols of these plates.

The biography of Simone de Beauvoir

French philosopher, novelist, memoirist and essayist, considered a major theorist of feminism.

Simone de Beauvoir, born in Paris, receives a bourgeois, conformist and religious education. She comes from a wealthy environment (her father is a lawyer), the eldest of two children. Her mother is a devout Catholic who raises her two daughters in a strict and traditional framework. À 14 years, Simone de Beauvoir becomes an atheist and decides to devote his life to studies and writing. She studied philosophy at the Sorbonne in Paris where she meeting Jean-Paul Sartre with whom she will share his life. In 1929, she obtained thephilosophy aggregation. A professor in Marseille, Rouen, then Paris, she left teaching in 1943, not finding in this profession the conditions for “total emancipation”. It was at this time that she began the literary career to which she aspired. An ardent advocate of existentialism embodied by her companion Jean-Paul Sartre, she raises questions in order to find meaning in life in the absurdity of a world in which we did not choose to be born. From 1947 onwards, the trips follow one another to the United States, where she stayed in 1950, in Africa and Europe. She gets the Goncourt Prize in 1954 for The Mandarins. She continued to travel, to China (1955), Cuba and Brazil (1960), the Soviet Union (1962) while continuing the writing his memoirs and his action for the liberation of women.

Simonde de Beauvoir

In 1971, she became editor of a far-left magazine, Les Temps Modernes, which she founded with Sartre. Until her death, she collaborated on this review. Philosopher, essayist, novelist and playwright, she dominates women's literature of her time. Her autobiographical works bring back to life an entire generation, that of Saint-Germain-des-Prés. Outraged to see women treated as erotic objects, she never stopped leading a passionate struggle for his liberation. Le Second Sex became the bible of the global feminist movement.

From 1980, after the death of her husband, her physical and mental health deteriorated due to her dependence on alcohol and amphetamines. She died at the age of 78, and was buried in the same tomb as Jean-Paul Sartre.

The old post office

Until 18st century, there was not no postal service specific in the municipality. The factor of village, called "pedestrian", was responsible for the transporting mail on horseback, which took a whole day because of the bad roads. 1769 un first post office is created, where the letters are deposited while waiting for the weekly postman visit. En 1790 a tin box is manufactured for collect the village mail to then be taken to Hyères, 20 km away. Over time, the municipal post office changed location to adapt to the changing population. Finally, in 1978, un post office is inaugurated by Norbert Segard, Minister of Posts and Telecommunications.
