The project of the Path of the Wise was born during a session of the Council of Elders, made up of 9 women and 9 men aged 60 and over, chosen for their wise experience by the Municipal Councillors. On that day, the subject of reflection was the question of how to bring our republican motto “Liberty, Equality, Fraternity” to life? 

The birth of the Path of the Sages

The idea germinated that sprinkle the city with sentences emanating from famous women and men, globally recognized for their wisdom and their humanism, could challenge the awareness of passers-by Borméens as tourists. In order to justify this bold and innovative project in the eyes of the Mayor and his Municipal Council, the decision is taken to combine this route with historical plaques which were to be installed on the city's emblematic monuments. The members of the Council of Elders then determined the route of this path within the medieval village and worked on the support, texts, images and symbols of these plates.

Republican buildings

The buildings located under Place Saint-François include the town hall, a former school and the war memorial, who have been inaugurated in 1892 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution. THEold town hall was originally located in the oven street and had been used as boys' school and court. Over time, the population started to challenging the medieval aristocracy who oppressed the inhabitants with unfair taxes. The French Revolution found an echo in Bormes from February 1789, with elections of deputies and filing of citizens' grievance books. To celebrate the centenary of the Revolution, the municipality has decided to build a new town hall adapted to the managing a growing population. The location was chosen at theentrance to the village, near the new access road. The facade of the town hall faces the people.

Le war memorial, designed by the architect Charles Maurel, is one of rare monuments commemorating the French Revolution. It features sculptures by Hippolyte Moreau, which won awards at the Universal Exhibitions of 1878 and 1900. The monument was later transformed into a war memorial after World War I, with commemorative plaques bearing the names of the victims.

The village school was developed due to the population living mainly in the village. Over the years, the premises have changed location several times, depending on availability. Finally, a school group has been built in 1889-1891 and inaugurated in 1892. The school was divided into girls' and boys' schools. Later the school was transferred to the plain and fame Jean Moulin School. These structures symbolize the importance of education, democracy and the memory of those who sacrificed their lives for the homeland.
