Benedictine monastery founded in 1011 by the monks of the Abbey of Saint-Victor in Marseille. It is a double priory composed of two adjoining cloisters occupied by monks and nuns under the authority of the Abbot of Saint-Victor.
Some of the nuns who took the veil at La Celle came from the high aristocracy of Provence and Languedoc. Garsende de Sabran, Countess of Provence and heiress to the County of Forcalquier, retired there in 1225.
The development of the site mainly took place between 1180 and 1230. The buildings of the female monastery from this period can now be visited. Reformed in 1660 on the orders of Cardinal Mazarin, then Abbot of Saint-Victor, following the relaxation of the Rule of Saint-Benoît, the abbey experienced a slow decline until the death of the last nun at the end of the XNUMXth century.
The monument, then not used for religious activities, was sold during the French Revolution as national property and converted into a farm, then into a luxury hotel run by Mrs. Fournier in the 1940s.
The medieval part of the monument has been completely restored: a considerable project which was completed at the beginning of 2021 and which allowed the complete reconstruction of the convent buildings and the enhancement of this remarkable Romanesque building.
Several archaeological excavation campaigns led by the Var Department were carried out between 2011 and 2018.
