The Mont Faron Memorial was inaugurated by General de Gaulle on August 15, 1964 to honor the memory of the men and women involved in the landing operations and the liberation of Provence. Unlike the Battle of Normandy led mainly by American troops, it was General de Lattre de Tassigny's Army B which was in charge of the two largest battles of the Provence campaign, Toulon and Marseille. This contribution to the war effort ensured a role and a place for France in the post-war world concert of nations, and the construction of the Mont Faron Memorial is the symbol of national pride, the France liberated by itself.
50 years after its opening, President Hollande wanted the Mont Faron Memorial to have a makeover in order to pay a just tribute to all those involved in the event who came from all walks of life to liberate France: the free French, the soldiers from Africa, the resistance fighters and the allies.
The new museum trail of the Provence landings has 600 m² of exhibition space in which 200 collectibles and numerous multimedia supports are brought together to facilitate the understanding of this historical event little known to the general public.
A place for reflection, transmission and teaching, the memorial also provides a room dedicated to hosting educational workshops.
