A living place of memory, the International Perfume Museum approaches the history of perfume from its different aspects: raw materials, manufacturing, industry, innovation, trade, design, marketing, uses. Perfume is also expressed through fabulous objects from five continents such as works of art, textiles, archaeological evidence, etc.
The International Perfume Museum is also a bold architectural project by Frédéric Jung, built around a 3th century rampart and the Pontevès mansion, covering 500 m2 with gardens and terraces in an exceptional landscaped setting.
Communicate, care for, seduce…
These are the major missions of perfume and the three axes of presentation
collections at the MIP and the MIP Gardens.
Communicate: In ancient times, people communicated with the afterlife through incense and other sacred ointments. Today, the communicative function of perfume is used for other applications such as olfactory marketing.
To heal: In the Middle Ages, the therapeutic virtues of plants and spices were discovered and the foundations of modern aromatherapy were laid.
Seduce: From the 17th century onwards, perfume established itself as a means of seduction which continued to evolve to the creative compositions of today, driven by ever stronger advertising communication.
Visit differently…
Throughout the year, the International Perfume Museum and the MIP Gardens offer temporary exhibitions, thematic visits, experiments (olfactory and taste workshops), specific visits for school groups, meetings with recognized speakers, a documentation center, and a free-access shop.
