The Bormes Museum, a historical site

The building that houses the Bormes-les-Mimosas Museum of History and Art ( MHAB ) has had several lives throughout the centuries. It has been a private residence, a town hall, a school, then a private residence again, and finally, a museum. Located at the end of Rue Carnot, its existence began in the 17th century. The site is almost outside the village, near the bread ovens, which were built there to prevent the risk of fire.
The building has been remodeled several times , but the use of local stone in its construction has remained true to its original architecture. The rooms are spread over different levels to create spacious, airy, and bright rooms. The coffered ceiling, inspired by Italian palaces, creates an atmosphere of bourgeois homes while preserving the authenticity of the local gneiss.
In 2022, a new museum and architectural program was launched to renovate the building and reveal its strengths. The original materials were preserved and enhanced with modern, lightweight materials. These materials enhance the existing structure while highlighting the local Bormes stone. The project allows visitors access to all five levels of the building while preserving its structure. The museum enjoys a prime location in the heart of the historic village, overlooking the plain and the coastline. Thanks to a new distribution of space, visitors can now enjoy a 360° view.
An anniversary exhibition for the museum's 100th anniversary
In 2026, the Museum of History and Art of Bormes-les-Mimosas celebrates its centenary with an exceptional exhibition entitled "Bormes, Colors of a Century." More than 80 works, from prestigious public and private collections, are displayed alongside archives, period objects, and audio recordings to tell the story of Bormes' evolution from a rural village to a popular destination for artists and visitors!
